Pastor’s Pearls

A devotional message from Pastor Alan Jackson

It seems all but impossible to escape worries.  What are you worrying about today?  Sometimes we have some pretty big concerns, and sometimes we just sweat the small stuff.  But Jesus said that worry doesn’t help us at all. In the Sermon on the Mount He said, “. . .  Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?” (Matthew 6:27)  This week I came across this a list of proverbs about worry, and I thought I’d pass some of them along.  There’s some wisdom here we all might find helpful.

œ      Live longer by worrying less.

œ      Worrying occurs when God is left out of the process.

œ      Worry is a choice.

œ      Instead of worrying about what you can’t do, think about what God can do for you.

œ      The best way to stop worrying is to start praying.

œ      Prayer changes things.  Worry changes nothing.

œ      Anxiety is short-lived if we give it to God.

Remember Christ’s words: “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:31-33)

See you in Church!

Ministry Action Plan (MAP) Committee

One facet of the action plan is to include prayer as a core value.  At the last administrative meeting, the following prayer strategy was approved;  “Prayer is a core value of our church, and we plan to:

œ      Increase our prayer time

·         by continuing to hold a weekly prayer gathering,

·         by encouraging members of our church family to have a daily personal quiet time with God,

·         by beginning and ending every church activity, meeting, and/or gathering in the church’s corporate life with prayer,

·         by encouraging small groups to meet for the purpose of prayer.

œ      Continue to respond quickly to urgent prayer requests from church members through our prayer chain.

œ      Encourage broader participation in the church’s prayer chain.

œ      Rededicate our special prayer chapel, and emphasize use of the chapel by members of the church family.

œ      Pray for our leaders, our mission and our ministry.

œ      Provide a listing of prayer needs in each Sunday’s bulletin.

œ      Provide teaching on prayer.

The Women’s Booth at the FAIR

It is fair time!  Want to join the fun and help in the booth??  People have been great about contributing supplies and signing up for shifts but there are still some openings on all shifts. Remember, you are reimbursed for the cost of admission and you get to sample the products. Friday and Saturday are the days where the most help is needed.  If you are interested in working in the church kitchen to create the custard pies and cobblers or will bake from home, check with Mary Jo and Jenna so they can plan on your “goodies” The United Methodist Women’s booth is the primary way they earn money for their mission work.  Feel free to talk with Jenna or Mary Jo about any questions you might have.

We are sponsoring a special program before the fair.

On Sunday August 7 at 6 pm, we are inviting everyone form the community to join us in blessing the fair.  Featured guests will be “Tapestry” from the Burlington Baptist Church.  A watermelon feast will follow the worship.  Come and join in the fellowship.

Wednesday Evening Bible Study

Beginning June 15, our Wednesday evening study will be “Living in God’s Presence.”  We will explore the Bible’s explanations of the presence of the Almighty, as well as traditional and contemporary authors’ understandings of how we can live constantly in the comfort and power of God’s abiding presence.  Join us as we grow as disciples.

BURLINGTON - 79th best place to live in the country, says CNN/Money Magazine's Best Places to Live for 2005 list.  The ranking considered factors such as location, crime, median household income, housing and education based on information from a database of nearly 40,000 cities across the nation. The town's Union Square is on the National Register for Historic Places.  The town is often overlooked on such lists because it is not incorporated.  The CNN/Money listing said 18,488 people live in the town and surrounding area.  The only other Kentucky community on the list was Crestwood near Louisville, which came in at 52, West Chester Township, in Butler County, Ohio, ranked 45th.

We are still collecting things for this project; specially the Health Kits, School Kit and Sewing Kit.  Once the fair is over a more detailed request will be made.

Thank you Helen Smoot !!

Helen has been so great about assisting in the church office.  If she had not been able to help, the office might not have open as much as it is.  We are indeed lucky to have her in our congregation.

Benson United Methodist Church

The Benson United Methodist Church in Harrison County has decided to rebuild after the tragic fire which occurred not last month. The outpouring of offers of help has been amazing.  As of right now the main need is one of finance. If you would like to assist, donations can be sent to the Benson United Methodist Building Fund     c/o 8887 US Highway 27North, Cynthiana KY  41031

Please make all checks out to the Benson UMC Building fund.  Additionally, as the church progresses in planning please hold them in prayer.  They will be seeking help in the form of work groups (e.g. those skilled in plumbing, electrical, painting, laborers for clean up, just to name a few).

Church Picnic at Boone Woods Park  - August 21st

Right after church we will go to Boone Woods (Shelter #2) for the picnic.  Hot dogs and Hamburgers (plus buns) will be provided as well as the plates, utensils and cups.  Please bring salads, veggies, deserts and drinks.  There is room for all types of games so bring your favorite one and gets some people to join in.  There is also shade for those who enjoy talking and other less active games.  Bridge anyone?

Men’s Group

Ben King is actively organizing a Men’s group for the church.  If you have ideas for this group’s activities or questions about the group, talk with him.

Cooperative Extension Service

There are many opportunities sponsored by the Boone County branch including ones that are Financially Focused, Nutritional, Gardening, Trees & Shrubs, Cultural Awareness, and even Educational walks and excursions.  See the brochure on the table in the Narthex.

Counselor to use prayer room

Rodney Valandra, a Christian Counselor, and member of Christ United Methodist Church, will be offering his services here at Gethsemane. As his practice is expanding in this area and he needed additional space, he contacted us, and through the agreement of the Administrative team and Rodney’s ministry, he will be using the former prayer chapel.

The former prayer chapel will be replaced with a new one on the other side of the sanctuary (in the room with the bell).  If you have any questions talk with Ben King.
